If you think hitting a one-handed backhand is hard, imagine doing it without the power of your legs. Dana Mathewson makes it look effortless.
The Paralympian became the first American woman to win a Grand Slam in wheelchair tennis in July when she and partner Yui Kamiji of Japan claimed the women’s wheelchair doubles title at Wimbledon. She has been training for the U.S. Open Wheelchair Championships, which will kick off on Sept. 7 in New York City.

In the history of the Gregorian calendar instituted by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, it’s difficult to imagine many sports weeks challenging the one recently logged by Dana Mathewson.
On a Saturday, the San Diego native became engaged to University of Central Florida medical student Dristin Hughes. The next morning, Mathewson hopped on a plane to compete at the immaculately manicured, strawberries-and-cream tennis dreamscape known as Wimbledon.

For the first time in tennis history, an American woman has won a Grand Slam in wheelchair tennis. San Diego’s Dana Mathewson and partner Japan’s Yui Kamiji defeated No. 1 seeds Diede De Groot and Aniek Van Koot of the Netherlands 6-1, 7-5 for the Wimbledon women’s wheelchair doubles title. Though the win marked Mathewson’s first title, Kamiji has won eight wheelchair singles Grand Slam tournaments and 18 wheelchair doubles. 

"It doesn't really feel real," Mathewson said in the pair's victory speech. "I'm just overjoyed."

For the first time in tennis history, an American woman has won a Grand Slam in wheelchair tennis: on Sunday at Wimbledon, Dana Mathewson partnered Japan’s Yui Kamiji to a 6-1, 7-5 win over No. 1 seeds Diede de Groot and Aniek van Koot of the Netherlands to take home the women's doubles title at the Championships.
